David Arnebeck begins training with Rickson Gracie 1996
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) started in 1993. However, David Arnebeck became aware of the event several years later when one of his students brought him a video tape of those events. Mr. Arnebeck observed Royce Gracie, even though smaller than the other competitors, consistently winning the event year after year, submitting all of this opponents regardless if they were world class boxers, kick-boxers, wrestlers, karate, kung fu, judo or any other style of martial art. All were defeated by Royce Gracie. And this was without weight classes, time limits, and the only rules were no biting or eye gouging. Everything else was allowed. So it was essentially REAL fighting! This was very exciting to Mr. Arnebeck as it was exactly what he had been training for years, reality based fighting skills that actually worked in real fighting situations! However, at the same time Mr. Arnebeck realized Royce Gracie was demonstrating specific technique appications and skills that he (and the rest of the worldwide martial arts community) had not been exposed to.
At the end of winning the UFC, Royce Gracie stated, "Rickson is ten times better than me. He is the only on who can beat everybody."
So David Arnebeck sought out Rickson Gracie and began training with him starting at his Chicago Seminar May 18-21 1996. From that day forward, David Arnebeck continued to train with Rickson every chance he could get. He would eventually train privately with Rickson at his home for weeks at a time, in the Pacific Palasades in California. He would also train at Rickson's schools in Los Angeles (Pico, Sunset and Wilshire gyms), and he would tour with Rickson when he would give Seminars in the United States and Canada.
When he was not training with Rickson, Mr. Arnebeck would seek out training privates and seminars with Rickson's close family, representatives and instructors including Royler Gracie, Rockson Gracie, Kron Gracie, Rodrigo Vaghi and Megaton Diaz along with training at Rickson's gyms with Louis Heredia, David Kama, Chris Saunders, and Henry Akins.
